People Eating Fruit Records' limited edition black vinyl repress of Up In Flames, catalog number PEF002LP, carries the album under the Caribou name. Dan Snaith first released it in 2003 as Manitoba, and it was the last album he issued under that name; the label's notes recall that he was later forced to change it after a lawsuit. The album was reissued as a Caribou record in 2013.
Up In Flames was Snaith's second album, released on March 31, 2003 by The Leaf Label and Domino. He produced it himself, and the label's notes say it was made on the same modest home setup as its predecessor, Start Breaking My Heart. Koushik Ghosh co-wrote "Hendrix With Ko" and "Crayon"; the other eight tracks are Snaith's. "Jacknuggeted" was released as a single in February 2003, and "Hendrix With Ko" followed that August.
The album holds a Metacritic score of 88 from 20 reviews. Pitchfork gave it 8.6 on release and later placed it at No. 106 on its list of the top 200 albums of the 2000s. In 2015 Leaf's listeners picked it as one of ten albums the label reissued for its 20th anniversary.
