Emerald Green Vinyl

This is a new pressing of villagers on emerald green vinyl, issued by Jealous Butcher Records. The album was first released on May 19, 2023, as Califone's first record in three years, following Echo Mine in 2020.

Tim Rutili started Califone in Chicago in 1997, after his previous band Red Red Meat. He wrote all nine songs on villagers and produced the record with Brian Deck and Michael Krassner. Deck mixed it, and Adam Gonsalves mastered it at Telegraph Mastering. Rutili also directed the video for "the habsburg jaw," the opening track.

Sessions were spread across a string of studios, among them Narwhal in Chicago, Big Ego in Long Beach, Courthouse and Verdugo Sound in Los Angeles, 7 Track Shack in Phoenix, Speaking Mountain in New York and Old Unconscious in Portland, with further parts recorded at home. Longtime collaborators Ben Massarella and Rachel Blumberg play drums and percussion, alongside Max Knouse on guitars, Joshua Hill on violin and cello, Will Curry on saxophone and clarinet, and Nora O'Connor and Macie Stewart on vocals.

Jealous Butcher's notes describe the album as part experimental indie and part '70s soft rock. Its songs take in aging goths keeping their identity through year-long spooky decorations on "halloween," an imagined conversation with an inbred monarch on "the habsburg jaw," and the conflict between identity and technology on "ox-eye." Pitchfork rated villagers 8.1 on its original release.
