Jazz Dispensary Top Shelf 180g Black Vinyl LP

This is Craft Recordings' 2025 Jazz Dispensary Top Shelf reissue of Amazonas, catalog number CR00847. Kevin Gray cut the lacquers at Cohearent Audio from the original master tapes, keeping the chain all-analog (AAA), and the record was pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at RTI. It is housed in a tip-on jacket that Craft says replicates the 1976 cover art, Phil Carroll's painting of a river barge loaded with the band and its instruments, and the center labels carry the orange Fantasy design. Craft describes the release as the album's first return to vinyl in five decades.

Fantasy first issued Amazonas in 1976 as F-9502. The sleeve dates the sessions to June 1975 at Wally Heider's Recording in Los Angeles, with Ken Caillat as recording and remix engineer and Orrin Keepnews as executive producer. Airto Moreira produced, arriving, in Craft's account, from stints with Miles Davis, Return to Forever and Weather Report. George Duke wrote the arrangements, and Craft notes he also played synthesizers under the alias Dawilli Gonga, the name credited on the sleeve for electric keyboards.

The rest of the lineup is largely Brazilian. The back cover credits Tjader on vibes and marimba, David Amaro on electric and acoustic guitar, Egberto Gismonti on acoustic piano and synthesizer, Luis Alves on bass and Roberto Silva on drums and percussion. Hermeto Pascoal plays flute on "Mindoro," "Xibaba" and "Cahuenga," Raul de Souza adds trombone to "Noa Noa," appearing courtesy of Milestone Records, and Aloisio Milanez plays acoustic piano on "Tamanco no Samba." The writing draws on the same circle: the title track is João Donato's, "Xibaba" is Moreira's, "Mindoro" is a Tjader and Pascoal co-write, "Flying" comes from Amaro, "Corine" from Duke and "Noa Noa" from Sérgio Mendes.

Tjader had returned to Fantasy in the 1970s, the label where he started out as a leader in 1954, and in that decade he brought electronic instruments and rock rhythms into his bands. Wikipedia names Amazonas as his most notable album of the period, a few years before his Concord Picante record La Onda Va Bien won the 1980 Grammy for Best Latin Recording.
