Digitally Remastered CD Compilation

This compact disc carries C.W. McCall's Greatest Hits, a twelve-song Polydor compilation (catalog 825 793-2) drawn from the first five of his six albums of original material. The audio was digitally remastered for CD by Suha Gur at PolyGram Studios. The set was first issued on LP as Polydor PD-1-6156.

C.W. McCall was a character before he was a recording act. Omaha art director Bill Fries created the trucker for a Clio-winning run of Old Home Bread commercials, then took him to the charts with jingle writer Chip Davis, who later founded Mannheim Steamroller. Fries and Davis wrote eleven of the twelve songs here; "Roses For Mama" came from Gene Dobbins, Johnny Wilson and Wayne Sharpe. Davis and Don Sears produced the recordings, and Sears took the cover photograph.

"Convoy" opens the disc. Its CB-radio tale of truckers defying the 55 mph speed limit reached No. 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the country chart, went to No. 2 in the UK, and became the basis for Sam Peckinpah's 1978 film Convoy. Its pirate-flavored sequel, "'Round The World With The Rubber Duck," appears later in the program, alongside "Wolf Creek Pass," which reached No. 40 on the pop chart in 1975, and "Old Home Filler-Up An' Keep On A-Truckin' Cafe," named for the diner in the bread ads. The compilation itself reached No. 45 on Billboard's Country Albums chart.
