Six-Track CD EP in a Card Sleeve

Matador issued boygenius on CD in 2022, four years after the debut EP from Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus first appeared on the label in October 2018. This US pressing comes in a cardboard sleeve under catalog number OLE-1408CDS, with the six song titles written in script across the back and a front sticker spelling out who boygenius is. The back-cover credits note that Bridgers appears courtesy of Dead Oceans.

Matador's notes trace the record to a tour the three had booked together in 2018, and Bridgers has said the first idea was a 7-inch to sell on the road. They spent a day writing and rehearsing in early June, then self-produced the EP over four days at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California, hiring only women for the sessions. Each member brought one mostly finished song for the other two to shape: Dacus brought "Bite the Hand", Bridgers "Me & My Dog" and Baker "Stay Down". The remaining three grew out of their demos.

Anna Butterss plays bass and Elizabeth Goodfellow plays drums. Joseph Lorge engineered the sessions, Collin Pastore mixed every track except "Me & My Dog", which Lorge mixed, and Heba Kadry mastered the EP at Timeless Mastering. Christian Lee Hutson shares the writing credit on "Ketchum, ID", and the photography is by Lera Pentelute.

The EP holds a Metacritic score of 84 from 13 reviews. It reached No. 3 on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart and No. 9 on Independent Albums, and NPR placed it 12th on its list of the 50 best albums of 2018. In 2023 it reached No. 10 on the UK Independent chart. Its cover photograph echoes the 1969 debut by Crosby, Stills & Nash. The band's first full-length, The Record, followed on Interscope in 2023.
