Clear Vinyl 40th Anniversary Edition

Rhino's 40th anniversary edition of Book of Love's self-titled debut puts the album on a single clear vinyl LP, newly remastered by Ted Jensen, the album's original engineer. Rhino's notes describe it as the first official vinyl reissue of the record since its original 1986 release, and Rough Trade lists the pressing at 140 grams.

The jacket art has been reworked with Nick Egan, the album's original art director, and the cover now carries the years MCMLXXXVI and MMXXVI. A four-page insert premieres outtakes from Michael Halsband's photo session for the album and carries new liner notes by Kurt B. Reighley, drawn from fresh interviews with Susan Ottaviano and Ted Ottaviano. The insert also holds credits and lyrics, and the disc sits in a poly-lined white inner sleeve with a die-cut window. Catalog number RCV1 25355, made in the U.S.A.

Book of Love first issued the album on Sire on April 1, 1986, with Ivan Ivan producing. The lineup was Susan Ottaviano on lead vocals, with Ted Ottaviano, Jade Lee and Lauren Roselli on keyboards and backing vocals, working through an Oberheim Xpander, Yamaha DX-7, Casio CZ-1000, Roland Juno 6 and Roland JX-8P alongside a sampler, piano, tubular bells, chimes and melodica. Ivan Ivan had passed the band's demo of "Boy" to Sire founder Seymour Stein, which led to their signing.

"Boy," written by Ted Ottaviano, came out as a single in 1985 and reached No. 7 on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play chart, after which the band opened for Depeche Mode. The album itself did not chart in the U.S., but "I Touch Roses," "You Make Me Feel So Good" and "Modigliani (Lost in Your Eyes)" followed "Boy" onto the dance and club charts. "Boy" was later used in the 2025 film Companion.
