Black Vinyl

Ghosts of American Psychonauts is a live album by Bonnie "Prince" Billy, the name Will Oldham records under, released in the US by No Quarter. Its eight songs were recorded at The Pico Union Project in Los Angeles over Valentine's Day weekend 2025, in the wake of the Los Angeles fires.

The recordings were made just after the release of The Purple Bird, Oldham's January 2025 studio album produced by David Ferguson. Three of its songs, "Sometimes It's Hard to Breathe," "London May" and "Downstream," are rearranged here with new instrumentation, and Ferguson sings on "Downstream." The rest of the set reaches back across Oldham's catalog and closes with "I See a Darkness," the title track of his 1999 album, which Johnny Cash recorded for American III: Solitary Man in 2000 with Oldham singing background vocals.

Oldham's touring partners Thomas Deakin (clarinet, down-tuned electric guitar) and Jacob Duncan (flute, saxophone) are joined by London May on drums, Emmett Kelly on bass, Ryder McNair on piano, and saxophonists Dv DeVincentis and Patrick Shiroishi. Oldham has said that everyone on that stage "knows how to tell stories, musically."

This edition is a single LP pressed on black vinyl.
