Black Vinyl LP

This single black LP is the Columbia/Legacy repress of John Wesley Harding that reached shops on May 22, 2026, on the same street date as new pressings of Another Side of Bob Dylan and New Morning. The jacket follows the stereo issue and carries its original CS 9604 catalog number, and the twelve songs run six to a side.

John Wesley Harding was Dylan's eighth studio album and the last of his LPs that Columbia issued in parallel mono (CL 2804) and stereo (CS 9604) editions. Producer Bob Johnston cut it in three sessions at Columbia's Studio A in Nashville in October and November 1967, in under twelve hours of studio time. Charlie McCoy on bass and Kenneth Buttrey on drums carried most of the record behind Dylan's guitar, harmonica and piano; Pete Drake's pedal steel appears only on the closing pair, "Down Along the Cove" and "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight."

Dylan asked Columbia to release it without publicity and declined to pull a single. It reached No. 2 in the US, spent 13 weeks at No. 1 in Britain and was certified gold by the RIAA within three months. "All Along the Watchtower" later became one of his most widely known songs through Jimi Hendrix's 1968 recording.

John Berg's cover photograph shows Dylan with the Bengali Baul musicians Luxman and Purna Das and the Woodstock stonemason Charlie Joy, and the back carries Dylan's own liner notes, a short tale of three kings. The title misspells the Texas outlaw John Wesley Hardin; Wesley Stace, who performed as John Wesley Harding, has written that no one knows why.
