Gatefold Double LP on Black Vinyl

This is the standard vinyl edition of Seven Horses For Seven Kings: two black LPs in a gatefold jacket with black inner sleeves, issued by Thrill Jockey on January 25, 2019 under catalog number Thrill-481. A smaller run on green mashup vinyl was pressed alongside it and carries its own sticker barcode. Thirteen tracks are spread across four sides, and a download code is included.

Black To Comm is the solo project of German sound artist Marc Richter, who also runs the Dekorder label. This was his first album for Thrill Jockey, and Boomkat's notes place it as the project's first new album since the self-titled Black To Comm on Type in 2014. Thrill Jockey's notes trace it to a busy stretch of commissions for film, theater, art installations, apps and sleep music, with site-specific residencies pushing Richter toward abstract sound art and extensive touring drawing the raw energy of live performance into the studio work.

Rhythm, largely absent from earlier Black To Comm releases, runs through much of this one. The label points to the fractured techno breaks of "Fly on You," the war drums of "Rameses II" and the pulsing Mellotron of "Angel Investor." Richter treats the studio as his instrument, setting samples from contemporaries such as Nils Frahm against fragments of early recorded music and medieval song, and Thrill Jockey calls the result "unashamedly dark, undeniably angry."

The sleeve credits recording at Cellule 75 in Hamburg between 2014 and 2018, with additional recordings at INA/GRM in Paris in November 2015. Jon Mueller plays drums on "Semirechye," and the percussion on "If Not, Not" is sampled from a 2006 recording. Mastering is by Lupo at Calyx in Berlin, and the artwork is by Andreas Diefenbach.
