Deluxe Edition 2LP, 2021 Remaster, Gatefold Sleeve

This is Rhino's double-vinyl deluxe edition of Heaven and Hell: the newly remastered album on the first LP, and a second LP of rarities and live recordings. Rhino issued it on March 5, 2021, together with a matching deluxe edition of Mob Rules, the other studio album by the first lineup with Ronnie James Dio. Rhino's announcement explains that space constraints meant both vinyl editions carry a selection of the bonus material from the 2CD sets rather than all of it. On this pressing that selection runs to seven tracks, and the Hammersmith Odeon recordings that close the CD set are not included.

Side C opens with two live B-sides from the original singles: "Children Of The Sea," which backed "Neon Knights," and an edited live "Heaven And Hell," which backed "Die Young." A mono 7-inch edit of "Lady Evil" follows. The edited "Heaven And Hell" and the four tracks that end the record were recorded at the Hartford Civic Center in Connecticut on August 10, 1980, according to the sleeve credits. Rhino lists both B-sides and all four Hartford performances as previously unreleased in North America.

The record comes in a gatefold jacket, and a sticker on the front identifies it as the remastered 1980 album with a bonus LP of rarities and live versions. The sleeve credits the 2021 mastering to Wired Masters in London. Rhino released it in the US under catalog number R1 599498.

Heaven and Hell came out in 1980. It is Black Sabbath's ninth studio album and the first with Dio, who replaced Ozzy Osbourne in 1979. Martin Birch produced it at Criteria Studios in Miami and Studio Ferber in Paris. The album reached No. 9 in the UK and No. 28 on the Billboard 200. It was certified platinum in the US in 1986, and in April 1982 it became the only Black Sabbath studio album to be certified gold in the UK. Tony Iommi told Apple Music that the band usually opened an album with a fast song, and "Neon Knights" was chosen to open this one. The cover is Lynn Curlee's painting Smoking Angels.
