Rhino High Fidelity 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP, Unnumbered Limited Edition

This is the unnumbered run of Black Sabbath's debut in Rhino High Fidelity, the label's all-analog reissue series. Kevin Gray cut it at Cohearent Audio from the original analog master tapes, and it is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Optimal Media. It matches the numbered edition of 5,000 except that it carries no number, and its obi strip reads "Limited Edition" in place of the numbered wording. Rhino also issued it on October 4, 2024 as part of Rocktober 2024.

The record comes in a heavyweight gatefold jacket with the obi and a four-page insert of photos, historical artifacts and liner notes, built around engineer Tom Allom talking with Hugh Gilmour about making the first Black Sabbath album. The runouts are etched. The catalog number, RHF1 1871, keeps the 1871 of the original US Warner Bros. issue, and the sides follow that US sequence, with "Wicked World" opening side two.

Vertigo first released the album in the UK on February 13, 1970, and Warner Bros. followed in the US that June. Rodger Bain produced it, with Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward cutting most of it in one long session at Regent Sounds in London. Rhino's notes describe it as the birth of heavy metal; it peaked at No. 23 on the Billboard 200 and went platinum.
