Black Vinyl LP in Gatefold Sleeve

This is the standard black vinyl pressing of Cavalcade, Rough Trade catalog number RT0212LP: one LP in a gatefold jacket. The album was issued on black vinyl, picture disc, CD and cassette. This LP has one odd detail. The artwork is arranged so the opening of the sleeve sits at the top and the spine at the bottom, so the record slides out upward rather than to the side.

The vinyl configuration carries one track the other formats handle differently. "Introduction," a short opening piece of about a minute and a half, plays as the first track on side A. It is left off the rear cover and is named only in the credits on the inner gatefold. On CD copies it is hidden in the pregap before "John L."

At release, one standard black LP in the UK and one in the US held a hidden "golden ticket" offering a choice of prizes. Because of that, sales of this format did not count toward the album's UK chart position, and the album entered the UK chart at number 60. Early pre-orders from independent shops also came with a bonus flexi disc, a cover chosen by fans in a poll. US indie stores got Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U." The flexi was a launch bundle that ran only while stocks lasted. It is not part of the standard package.

Cavalcade is black midi's second studio album, following Schlagenheim (2019). Its songs took shape on the road in late 2019, between a world tour and the band's appearance at the Mercury Prize ceremony. This time the band wrote with more planning, where the debut had grown out of jam sessions. "John L" was recorded first, with Marta Salogni in London, and a helicopter passing overhead ended up on the take. The rest was recorded with producer John "Spud" Murphy at Hellfire Studios outside Dublin in September 2020, with overdubs in London that October.

Guitarist Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin stepped away from the band before the sessions and does not play on the album. He still shares writing credits on "John L" and "Chondromalacia Patella." Touring members Kaidi Akinnibi on saxophone and Seth Evans on keyboards joined the sessions, and Jerskin Fendrix plays violin on "John L." Geordie Greep sings most of the record, and Cameron Picton wrote and sings "Slow" and "Diamond Stuff." Rough Trade's notes list cello, grand piano, accordion, trombone, two bouzoukis, a late-19th-century zither called a Marxophone, lap steel and a wok among the extra instruments. At Metacritic the album scored 81 across 22 reviews.
