Heavyweight Black Vinyl 2LP in a Gatefold Sleeve

This is the standard black vinyl edition of Utopia, catalog number TPLP1381: two heavyweight LPs in a glossy gatefold jacket, each disc in its own glossy inner sleeve. Mandy Parnell mastered the album, and her name is etched into the runouts of this pressing.

Running past 71 minutes, Utopia was the longest of Björk's studio albums when it appeared, and the vinyl spreads it across four sides in a sequence of its own. The title track, fourth on the CD, opens side C here, and "Features Creatures" moves to the penultimate spot on side D.

Utopia is Björk's ninth studio album, produced primarily by Björk and the Venezuelan producer Arca, who on this record worked with her from the first sketches rather than joining once the songs were written, as on Vulnicura. It was released on November 24, 2017, through One Little Indian in the UK and The Orchard in the US.

Björk built the album around air rather than strings. She formed a twelve-piece Icelandic flute section, arranged for it and conducted it, and wrote an arrangement for the Hamrahlíð Choir under Þorgerður Ingólfsdóttir. Birdsong links many of the tracks, taken from her own field recordings and from Jean C. Roché's 1973 album Oiseaux du Vénézuéla. Katie Buckley plays the harp parts Björk wrote for "Arisen My Senses" and "Blissing Me," Rabit co-produced "Losss," and "Features Creatures" draws on Sarah Hopkins' 1996 harmonic whirlies recording "Kindred Spirits." Bergur Þórisson, Bart Migal and Chris Elms engineered the sessions, and Heba Kadry and Marta Salogni mixed them.

Jesse Kanda designed the cover around a silicone mask by James T. Merry, with makeup by the Berlin drag artist Hungry. "The Gate," "Blissing Me" and "Arisen My Senses" were issued as singles, and the album was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, Björk's eighth consecutive nomination in that category.
