Black Vinyl LP Reissue

This is Björk's score for Matthew Barney's film Drawing Restraint 9, reissued as a single black LP by One Little Independent Records under catalog number TPLP459. All eleven tracks of the 2005 soundtrack are here, in their original order. "Petrolatum", the extra piece added to the 2006 DualDisc alongside its 5.1 surround mixes, is not part of this sequence. The artist's store describes the record as composed with minimal vocals for Barney's film.

Its full title is The Music from Matthew Barney's Drawing Restraint 9. It is Björk's second soundtrack album, first issued on 25 July 2005 in the UK and on 23 August 2005 in the US. The film is the ninth installment in Barney's Drawing Restraint series. Björk co-stars in it as an "Occidental Guest", and most of it takes place aboard the Japanese whaling vessel Nisshin Maru.

To prepare the score, Björk traveled to Japan to study ancient Japanese music. Several pieces are built around the sho, a mouth organ with sixteen reeds, played here by Mayumi Miyata, who also appears in the film playing it. "Holographic Entrypoint" carries a Noh score and a vocal performance by Shiro Nomura. Björk sings on only three tracks: "Bath", "Storm" and "Cetacea".

Will Oldham opens the record on "Gratitude". He sings a letter from a Japanese fisherman to General Douglas MacArthur, set to a melody by Barney. Zeena Parkins, who had played harp on Vespertine, plays on "Gratitude", "Shimenawa" and "Cetacea". "Storm" began as "Nameless", a piece from Björk's 2003 tour, which she looped and edited with Leila Arab. Björk produced the album herself, with Mark Bell and Valgeir Sigurdsson as co-producers on "Ambergris March". She later sampled "Hunter Vessel" on Volta for "Vertebrae by Vertebrae" and "Declare Independence".
