Black Vinyl LP

This is One Little Independent Records' single-LP edition of Debut, catalog number TPLP31: eleven tracks on one black disc, six on side one and five on side two. The same catalog number and barcode have carried the LP through several reissues, and newer sleeves print the label's current name, One Little Independent, in place of One Little Indian. The cover portrait is by Jean-Baptiste Mondino, with sleeve design by Me Company.

Debut was Björk's first international solo album after the Sugarcubes, issued in 1993 by One Little Indian and Elektra. Nellee Hooper produced the first ten tracks; Björk co-produced "Like Someone in Love" with him and produced "The Anchor Song" alone. The album reached number three in the UK, number two in Iceland and 61 in the US, where it was certified platinum and remains her best-selling record. Four of its five singles are here: "Human Behaviour", "Venus as a Boy", "Big Time Sensuality" and "Violently Happy". The fifth, "Play Dead", is not part of this tracklist.

Studio programmer Marius de Vries brought the keyboards and synthesizers. "Aeroplane" and "The Anchor Song" go back to the demo cassette Björk handed to One Little Indian's Derek Birkett while still in the Sugarcubes, and both carry saxophone parts arranged by Oliver Lake. The strings on "Venus as a Boy" and "Come to Me" were played by a film studio orchestra in India, arranged through tabla player Talvin Singh. "Like Someone in Love", a jazz standard, grew out of 1991 sessions with harpist Corky Hale. "There's More to Life Than This" is credited, on the sleeve and the label, as recorded live at the Milk Bar toilets.
