Indie Exclusive 2LP on White Eco-Mix Vinyl

Woody Guthrie left behind more than a thousand sets of finished lyrics, written between 1939 and 1967, that he never set to music. In the spring of 1995 his daughter Nora asked Billy Bragg, who had just played a Guthrie tribute concert in Central Park, to write tunes for some of them. Bragg asked Wilco to join him. Mermaid Avenue, named for the Coney Island street where Guthrie lived, is the first album to come out of that collaboration.

Nobody tried to sound like Guthrie. Bragg and Jeff Tweedy wrote new music in their own styles and split the lead vocals, seven songs each. Jay Bennett co-wrote the music for "California Stars" and "Christ for President." Natalie Merchant sings lead on "Birds and Ships" and harmony on "Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key," Corey Harris plays lap steel on "California Stars," and Eliza Carthy plays violin on both of those Side A songs.

Bragg and the band recorded in Dublin at Totally Wired and Windmill Lane, at King Size Sound Labs in Chicago and at Fort Apache in Boston, and produced the album themselves with Grant Showbiz. Elektra released it on June 23, 1998.

It was nominated for the Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album and placed fourth in the Village Voice's Pazz & Jop critics poll for 1998. It reached No. 90 on the Billboard 200 and No. 12 in Australia, where it went gold. Mermaid Avenue Vol. II followed in 2000, and a third volume in 2012. In June 2026 Bragg, Wilco and Merchant played the songs together at Wilco's Solid Sound festival in North Adams, Massachusetts.

Craft Recordings presses this edition on two LPs of white eco-mix vinyl, the 15 songs spread across four sides. It is a limited run, exclusive to independent record stores.
