Black Vinyl LP

This is the standard black pressing of Billy Bragg's tenth studio album, issued by Cooking Vinyl under catalog number COOKLP802: a single 140-gram LP at 33 1/3 RPM with six songs on each side. A printed inner sleeve carries the lyrics to all twelve songs together with the musicians credited on every track, track timings are printed on the center labels, and a download card is included. Miles Showell mastered the record at Abbey Road Studios, and his name is etched into the runout on both sides. The vinyl carries a February 4, 2022 street date, following the album's first release in 2021.

Romeo Stodart of the Magic Numbers produced the album with Dave Izumi, who also engineered and mixed it at Echo Zoo Studio in Eastbourne. Lockdowns postponed the sessions twice; Bragg has said the band built backing tracks from his demos before the group finally met in the studio in April 2021. He has also described a 1960s Mellotron giving the record a woozy, dreamlike sound that suited the uncertainty of the time, and the title track lists the gatherings and occasions that lockdown rules called off.

Bragg wrote every song except the closer, "Ten Mysterious Photos That Can't Be Explained," which he wrote with his son Jack Valero, who also plays electric guitar and sings backing vocals on the album. The band around them includes Michele Stodart on bass and backing vocals, Joe Harvey Whyte on pedal steel, lap steel and Dobro, Darren Beckett on drums and Nick Pynn on fiddle. Jill Furmanovsky took the sleeve photographs, and Chemical X designed the package.

The album reached No. 44 on the UK Albums Chart. The Absolute Sound rated it four out of five for both music and sonics in its December 2021 issue, and in The Guardian Jude Rogers called it "a woozy, melancholic affair, full of Mellotrons, Moogs and resonant Dobro guitars."
