Verve Essential Vinyl Series 140-Gram Black Vinyl LP

Billie Holiday's Body and Soul comes back here as part of Verve Essentials, the reissue line Verve Records and UMe announced in August 2026 to mark the label's 70th anniversary. Every title in the series is mastered from high-resolution digital masters and pressed on 140-gram vinyl, housed in a standard sleeve with its original artwork, and none of them is a limited edition. This record carries the series' October 9, 2026 launch date, one of five opening titles alongside albums by John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong, Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto, and Charles Mingus.

The jacket reproduces the 1957 front cover, down to the Verve Clef Series banner and the original catalog number, MG V-8197. An Essential Vinyl Series sticker marks the front. The banner dates from a changeover at the label: Lady Sings the Blues, the album before this one, was Holiday's last on Clef Records, which Verve absorbed the following year.

Body and Soul is Holiday's seventh studio album. Norman Granz produced it at Capitol Studios in Hollywood on January 3, 4, 7 and 9, 1957, with Ben Webster on tenor saxophone, Harry "Sweets" Edison on trumpet, Barney Kessel on guitar, Jimmy Rowles on piano and Red Mitchell on bass. Alvin Stoller and Larry Bunker split the drum chair, four tracks each. Three of the eight songs are by George and Ira Gershwin. Saturday Review's 1957 notice called her "one of the best jazz singers," citing her sound, her attack and the directness of her delivery.
