Original Jazz Classics Series 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP

This is Craft Recordings' 2025 Original Jazz Classics edition of Moon Beams, catalog number CR00856. Kevin Gray cut new lacquers from the original stereo master tapes at Cohearent Audio, keeping the chain all-analog, and RTI pressed the record on 180-gram black vinyl. It arrives in a Stoughton tip-on jacket with an Original Jazz Classics obi strip, and the disc labels follow Riverside's stereo design.

Moon Beams first came out on Riverside in 1962, in stereo as RLP 9428 and in mono as RLP 428. It was the first record Bill Evans made with a trio after bassist Scott LaFaro died in 1961. Chuck Israels took over on bass, and Paul Motian stayed on drums. Orrin Keepnews produced, and Bill Schwartau engineered the sessions at Sound Makers in New York on May 17, May 29 and June 2, 1962.

Keepnews split the material from those dates by tempo. The ballads went on Moon Beams, and the faster tunes were held for a later album, How My Heart Sings! Joe Goldberg's original back-cover notes, reproduced on this jacket, call it Evans' first all-ballad collection. Two Evans originals open and close the record, with six standards in between: "Re: Person I Knew," whose title is an anagram of Keepnews's name, and "Very Early," which Evans wrote as an undergraduate.

The woman on the cover is Nico, photographed by Peter Sahula a few years before she sang with the Velvet Underground. Ken Deardoff designed the original sleeve.
