Original Jazz Classics Series 180-Gram LP in a Stoughton Tip-On Jacket with Obi

This is Craft Recordings' Original Jazz Classics edition of Gone With Golson, catalog number CR00859. Kevin Gray cut the lacquers from the original stereo master tapes at Cohearent Audio in an all-analog chain, and RTI pressed the record on 180-gram vinyl. The Stoughton tip-on jacket reproduces the original Prestige/New Jazz artwork, and an Original Jazz Classics obi wraps the left edge with session notes and personnel. Nat Hentoff's original liner notes run across the back cover.

Golson recorded the album on June 20, 1959, at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, leading a quintet with Curtis Fuller on trombone, Ray Bryant on piano, Ray's brother Tom Bryant on bass and Al Harewood on drums. Esmond Edwards supervised the date for Prestige's New Jazz imprint and took the cover photograph. It was Golson's fifth album and his first for New Jazz, and the obi notes that the session came several months before he formed the Jazztet with Art Farmer.

Ray Bryant wrote the opener, "Staccato Swing," and "Autumn Leaves" is the Joseph Kosma standard in Golson's own arrangement. "Soul Me," "Blues After Dark" and "Jam For Bobbie" are Golson compositions. Hentoff's notes record that "Jam For Bobbie" is named for Golson's wife, Bobbie, a classically trained dancer, and that "Blues After Dark" was first written for a West Coast session co-led by Charlie Persip and Howard Rumsey. Scott Yanow's AllMusic review called the record "a fine example of hard bop of the late '50s."
