Double LP on 180 Gram Black Vinyl in a Double Pocket Gatefold

Rainbow Blonde Records presses I Am A Man as a double LP on 180 gram black vinyl. The two discs are housed in a double pocket gatefold carrying photography by Janette Beckman, and a poster insert comes inside. The label presents the album as Ben Williams' debut as a vocalist.

Williams is a bassist from Washington, D.C. Winning the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in 2009 brought him his first record deal, with Concord, where he released State of Art (2011, with his band Sound Effect) and Coming of Age (2015), both largely acoustic and instrumental. DownBeat gave State of Art a 4.5-star review, and the magazine's Critics Poll named him a Rising Star on bass in 2013 and again in 2015. He has performed or recorded with Pat Metheny, George Benson, Wynton Marsalis, Robert Glasper, Lauryn Hill and Nicholas Payton, among others.

For I Am A Man he moved to Rainbow Blonde, the imprint co-owned by singer José James, and put his own voice and songwriting at the front. The title takes its words from the placards carried during the 1968 Memphis sanitation workers' strike, and the sequence includes "The Death Of Emmett Till," written for the fourteen-year-old lynched in Mississippi in 1955. Engineer Brian Bender worked on the record's sound, which the label likens to the Soulquarians albums by The Roots, Erykah Badu and D'Angelo. In the label's notes, Williams says he wanted the record "to deal with the past, present, and future."

Guest vocalists include Wes Felton on "March On," Kendra Foster on "Promised Land" and "Come Home," Muhsinah on "High Road" and Niles on "Take It From Me." Marcus Strickland, Kris Bowers, Keyon Harrold, Anne Drummond, Jamire Williams and Justin Brown are among the players.
