Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series 180g Black Vinyl LP

This LP belongs to the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series, the reissue line Craft Recordings runs with Acoustic Sounds. The series launched in the spring of 2022, and this title was one of twelve added across 2024. Bernie Grundman, a GRAMMY-winning engineer and himself a Contemporary Records alum, cut the lacquers from the original master tapes for an all-analog (AAA) chain. The record is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings and housed in a Stoughton old-style tip-on jacket. The catalog number is CR00388, and the yellow labels carry the classic Contemporary Records design.

Ben Webster recorded the set in performance at the Renaissance, a Hollywood club, on October 14, 1960, with Jim Hall on guitar, Jimmy Rowles on piano, Red Mitchell on bass and Frank Butler on drums. Webster played the room often in the years before he left for Europe in 1964. Craft notes that the session went live, direct to two-track analog, with no overdubs, and that the glitches heard during "Stardust" belong to the original recording rather than the pressing.

The tapes sat unissued for a quarter century. Contemporary first released four of the performances in 1985 as Contemporary C-7646, produced by Lester Koenig, whose unfinished notes appear on the back cover. This edition follows the six-track running order of the 1989 Original Jazz Classics LP, which added "Renaissance Blues" and "What Is This Thing Called Love." AllMusic's Scott Yanow gave the album four stars and described Webster as being in "superior and creative form."
