Single LP Compilation, Acrobat Music ACRSLP1706

This Acrobat Music LP collects 18 recordings from the first three years of Ben E. King's solo career, 1960 to 1962, the period that followed his time as lead singer of the Drifters. It is a single record, nine tracks a side, catalog number ACRSLP1706. The back sleeve prints the songwriters and the year beneath every title and carries long-form liner notes; Acrobat is an imprint of the UK company Trapeze Music & Entertainment.

Side A opens with "Spanish Harlem," written by Jerry Leiber and Phil Spector and produced by Leiber and Mike Stoller. Atco issued it in December 1960 as the flip side of "First Taste of Love," which follows it here, and it became King's first hit away from the Drifters, reaching No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 15 on the R&B chart.

"Stand By Me" was recorded on October 27, 1960, and is credited to King with Leiber and Stoller. Released in 1961 with "On the Horizon" on its B-side, the pairing that fills tracks three and four, it went to No. 1 on the R&B chart and No. 4 on the Hot 100. It entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Library of Congress National Recording Registry in 2015.

"Amor" and "Souvenir of Mexico" come from King's 1961 debut album Spanish Harlem, arranged by Stan Applebaum. Side B carries "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)," credited on the sleeve to Ahmet Ertegun and Betty Nelson; it gave its name to the 1962 album on which "Stand By Me" first appeared on an LP.
