Black Vinyl LP With Bonus 7-Inch Single

This is the 2017 vinyl reissue of Mutations on DGC and Bong Load, catalog number B0025353-01. The eleven-song album is on one 12-inch LP. A 45 RPM 7-inch comes with it, with "Diamond Bollocks" on one side and "Runners Dial Zero" on the other. Acoustic Sounds' listing for this barcode also notes a lyric booklet in the package.

The pressing is part of UMe's program of returning Beck's DGC, Geffen and Interscope catalog to vinyl. That program began in October 2016 with Odelay, Sea Change and Guero. Mutations was first scheduled for April 2017, slipped, and came out on October 27, 2017, alongside Modern Guilt.

Beck and Nigel Godrich produced the album at Ocean Way in Hollywood between March 19 and April 3, 1998. At the time, Godrich was known for producing Radiohead's OK Computer. The sessions lean on Moog keyboards, acoustic guitars and string arrangements by David Campbell. The touring band is all here: Smokey Hormel, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Roger Manning and Joey Waronker, with Warren Klein on sitar and Greg Leisz on pedal steel. Bob Ludwig is credited with mastering.

Beck had Geffen's permission to put the record out on the small independent Bong Load label. Once Geffen executives heard it, they went back on that agreement and released it themselves in November 1998, and Beck sued. Mutations reached No. 13 in the US and went gold. It also made No. 24 in the UK and No. 23 in Australia, and it won the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. Autumn de Wilde took the cover photograph of Beck wrapped in plastic, Robert Fisher was art director, and the interior artwork uses sculptures and drawings by Tim Hawkinson.
