Black Vinyl LP

Romaplasm is the third studio album by Baths, the project of Los Angeles singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Will Wiesenfeld, issued by Anticon in November 2017 under catalog number ABR0168. This is the standard US pressing: a single black LP at 33 1/3 RPM, its twelve tracks split six to a side, with a download card inside the jacket. A mint green edition limited to 1,000 copies went to independent shops under a separate barcode.

The record arrived four years after Obsidian. The album's notes on the Baths Bandcamp page tie it to Wiesenfeld's at-home obsessions with anime, video games, books and comics, and describe it as his own post-modern take on Romanticism. Wiesenfeld has said he wanted "a record that mirrors those emotions but in an indirect way." The opening track, "Yeoman," went out ahead of the album with an official lyric video on Anticon's channel.

Wiesenfeld wrote, performed and produced the album. The Isaura String Quartet and string players including Emily Call, Madeline Falcone, Melinda Rice, Betsy Rettig and Derek Stein appear alongside Adam Wolf on French horn, Alfred Dalrington on bass clarinet and John Wiesenfeld on guitar. Morgan Greenwood contributed additional production, Mario Luna engineered, and Daddy Kev mastered. Cory Schmitz handled design and layout, and the cover photograph is credited to Wiesenfeld and Luna.

Romaplasm holds a Metacritic score of 73 across eight reviews. Pitchfork's Sasha Geffen rated it 7.9 out of 10, and PopMatters' Christopher Laird gave it 6 out of 10 while calling it the most personal and reflective Baths album to that point. From 2020 Wiesenfeld has released music on his own label, Basement's Basement, which now carries Romaplasm on Bandcamp; his next full-length, Gut, followed in 2025.
