35th Anniversary Edition on Limited Red & Green Ink Spot Vinyl

Peaceville marks 35 years of Mental Funeral with a limited single LP on red and green ink spot vinyl, catalog number VILELP1402, issued on August 14, 2026. The audio is a new remaster by Autopsy bassist Greg Wilkinson, cut at his Earhammer Studios.

Mental Funeral was Autopsy's second studio album, originally released on April 22, 1991. The band recorded it at Different Fur Studios in San Francisco in late 1990, with Ron Rigler engineering. Peaceville's announcement for this edition calls the album one of the greatest death metal records ever made, and describes its production as raw, organic and highly distinctive.

The cover painting is by Kev Walker, who had already supplied the artwork for Autopsy's 1989 debut, Severed Survival. His signature and the year sit in the lower right corner of the sleeve.

Autopsy formed in 1987 around drummer and vocalist Chris Reifert, who had played on Death's debut album Scream Bloody Gore before starting the group. Four Autopsy albums appeared on Peaceville in the band's first run, beginning with Severed Survival in 1989 and ending with the split in 1995. The band returned in 2010 with the EP The Tomb Within, followed by Macabre Eternal in 2011, and still works around the core trio of Reifert, Eric Cutler and Danny Coralles. The video above is Peaceville's own announcement film for this anniversary release.
