Clocktower Records Vinyl LP Reissue

This is Clocktower Records' LP of King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown, with the catalog number CTLP-085 on the disc labels and CT:085 printed on the jacket and spine. Clocktower has kept the record in print through repeated pressings under this one barcode, and the disc color has changed from run to run: retail listings for this UPC note that a copy may arrive on colored vinyl or on standard black. The sleeve credits distribution to Brad's Records in the Bronx, with Glen Osborne as executive producer and designer.

Reggae Vibes describes the album as Pablo's first self-produced set, issued in Jamaica on his own Yard label and in the US by Clocktower, without Pablo's permission.

Pablo produced the sessions at Randy's studio in Kingston and played melodica, piano, organ and clavinet, with Carlton Barrett on drums, Robbie Shakespeare and Aston "Family Man" Barrett on bass, and Earl "Chinna" Smith on guitar. Richard "Dirty Harry" Hall, Bobby Ellis and Vincent "Don D Junior" Gordon added tenor saxophone, trumpet and trombone. Pablo then took the tapes to King Tubby, who mixed them with Errol Thompson. Music journalist Lloyd Bradley has written that most of the tunes are remixes of Pablo's earlier hits or recuts of old Studio One rhythms.

The title track is a dub of Jacob Miller's "Baby I Love You So," first issued in 1974 as a Mango 45 (MS-2001) with the vocal on the B-side; Rolling Stone placed it at number 266 among the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The album was ranked 96th on New Musical Express's 1985 critics' list of the greatest albums ever made, and second in Mojo's 2024 list of the 50 best reggae albums. Steve Barrow wrote that it showed conclusively that a studio engineer could be considered as creative as the singers, musicians and producer behind the music.
