Transparent Orange Vinyl LP, Remastered by Colin Marston

This is Nuclear Blast's 2026 reissue of Atheist's debut album, pressed as a limited run on transparent orange vinyl under catalog number NBR 6912-7, with a street date of August 28, 2026. For this edition the audio was remastered by Colin Marston, whose engineering credits the label's notes list as Gorguts, Imperial Triumphant and Krallice. The nine tracks fit on a single LP, four on side A and five on side B.

The Florida band cut the album in 1988 at Morrisound Recording in Tampa with Scott Burns producing. The bankruptcy of their first label, Mean Machine Records, held up its release. The UK label Active Records stepped in and issued it in Europe in 1989, and Metal Blade licensed it for the American market in November 1990. The lineup was Kelly Shaefer on vocals and rhythm guitar, Rand Burkey on lead guitar, Roger Patterson on bass and Steve Flynn on drums. It is the only Atheist album with Patterson on bass. Ed Repka painted the hourglass cover.

Nuclear Blast's notes call the record a milestone of progressive metal and credit it with laying the foundation of what is now called technical death metal. In 2005 Rock Hard placed it at number 402 in its book The 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All Time, and Dark Tranquillity singer Mikael Stanne has named Atheist as an influence. The band signed with Nuclear Blast in 2023, and the label has been reissuing their catalog since then.
