Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP in a Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

This LP belongs to the Verve Acoustic Sounds Series. Matthew Lutthans mastered it from the original analog tapes at The Mastering Lab, and it was pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings. The etched runouts carry The Mastering Lab's TML-M mark. The tip-on gatefold jacket is printed on heavy board, and its front reproduces the original Verve stereo cover, catalog number V6-8629 included. The label issued this title as part of the series run marking Verve's 70th anniversary.

Verve first released The Shadow of Your Smile in 1965. It was Astrud Gilberto's second album under her own name, coming after The Astrud Gilberto Album earlier that year and a year after her recorded debut on "The Girl from Ipanema" with Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto. Creed Taylor produced it, Don Sebesky, Claus Ogerman and Joao Donato wrote the arrangements, and the album peaked at number 66 on the Billboard 200.

The songs mix mid-1960s pop with Brazilian material. Johnny Mandel and Paul Francis Webster's title song was first heard in the 1965 film The Sandpiper and went on to win the Oscar. Alongside it are "Fly Me to the Moon," the Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley song "Who Can I Turn To?" and five songs written or co-written by the Brazilian guitarist Luiz Bonfá, including "Manhã de Carnaval" and "The Gentle Rain." The second side ends with "Funny World," Ennio Morricone's theme from the film Malamondo.
