180 Gram Black Vinyl LP

Libertango is a single-LP Warner Classics compilation of Astor Piazzolla's music, issued in 2021, the centenary of the composer's birth. Ten pieces, five to a side, are drawn from recordings first released between 1999 and 2018, and the disc labels credit the performers track by track. The record is pressed on 180-gram vinyl in Germany.

Side A opens with Le Grand Tango from cellist Gautier Capuçon and pianist Jérôme Ducros, a 2018 recording from Capuçon's album Intuition. Martha Argerich and Eduardo Hubert follow with Oblivión in Hubert's transcription for two pianos, recorded live at the Lugano Festival. The Artemis Quartet and pianist Jacques Ammon play the Fuga y misterio from María de Buenos Aires, flutist Emmanuel Pahud and guitarist Christian Rivet play Bordel 1900 from History of the Tango, and guitarist Thibaut Garcia closes the side with Primavera Porteña, from his 2016 album Leyendas.

Side B begins with Adiós Nonino, in the Medaglia and Hammon arrangement for Die 12 Cellisten der Berliner Philharmoniker. Gidon Kremer and Kremerata Baltica, with bandoneonist Per Arne Glorvigen and pianist Vadim Sakharov, play the Milonga del Ángel in Rolf Gupta's transcription. The Artemis Quartet and Jacques Ammon return for Otoño Porteño, Soledad play Chinchin, and the record ends with Libertango from Quatuor Ébène, joined by drummer Richard Héry.

Warner Classics' notes place the music in Piazzolla's own story: studying composition in Paris in the 1950s, he was encouraged by his teacher Nadia Boulanger to build on the Argentine tango rather than set it aside, and the tango nuevo that followed is the style heard across both sides.
