Original Jazz Classics Series 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP in a Stoughton Tip-On Jacket with Obi

Craft Recordings reissues Surf Ride in its Original Jazz Classics Series as an all-analog (AAA) cut. Kevin Gray made the lacquers from the original master tapes at Cohearent Audio, and RTI pressed the record on 180-gram vinyl. It comes in a Stoughton tip-on jacket with an obi strip carrying the session credits, and the disc wears a red Savoy label under the Craft catalog number CR00865.

The jacket keeps Harvey Ragsdale's painted surfing cover on the front. The back reproduces the original Savoy layout: H. Alan Stein's liner notes, production by Ozzie Cadena and mastering credited to Van Gelder.

Savoy first issued the album as a 12-inch LP, catalog MG 12089, gathering three Los Angeles sessions. Side A opens with the March 29, 1953 date, where Pepper's alto is backed by Russ Freeman on piano, Bob Whitlock on bass and Bobby White on drums, then moves to March 4, 1952, with Hampton Hawes, Joe Mondragon and Larry Bunker. Side B is given entirely to the August 25, 1954 session, adding Jack Montrose on tenor saxophone alongside Claude Williamson, Monty Budwig and Bunker.

Pepper composed ten of the twelve titles, among them "Straight Life" and "Holiday Flight"; the other two are Lester Young's "Tickle Toe" and the Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields standard "The Way You Look Tonight." Reviewing the album for AllMusic, Scott Yanow found Pepper in superior form throughout, while faulting the somewhat random way the set was assembled.
