Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram Vinyl LP

This is the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series edition of Intensity, catalog number CR00761, issued by Craft Recordings on December 13, 2024. Bernie Grundman cut the lacquers from the original master tapes in an all-analog (AAA) chain, Quality Record Pressings in Salina, Kansas pressed the record on 180-gram vinyl, and it ships in a tip-on jacket printed by Stoughton Printing.

Craft Recordings and Acoustic Sounds run the series together, and Acoustic Sounds CEO Chad Kassem supervises every title. Each one comes from the catalog Lester Koenig built at Contemporary in Los Angeles, and each was first engineered by Roy DuNann, Howard Holzer, or both.

Pepper cut these seven standards at Contemporary's Los Angeles studio on November 23 and 25, 1960, with Dolo Coker on piano, Jimmy Bond on bass and Frank Butler on drums, and Koenig producing. It was his fifth album for the label. Contemporary held it back until 1963, when Pepper was serving a prison sentence, and it closed what is now called his early period.

Koenig's original liner notes quote Richard Hadlock, jazz editor of the San Francisco Examiner, who heard Pepper "well on his way toward a new kind of playing freedom," partly through the examples of John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman. Writing for AllMusic, Scott Yanow called the record an "interesting and largely enjoyable set."
