Indie Exclusive Lemon & Lime Vinyl, 60th Anniversary Edition

This indie-retail exclusive presses Buttercorn Lady on Lemon & Lime colored vinyl for the album's 60th anniversary: one LP, with the original six-piece program split three and three across its two sides. The sticker on the jacket places the recording at the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, California, in January 1966.

The tapes ran on January 1 and 9, 1966, with Art Blakey at the drums leading Chuck Mangione on trumpet, Frank Mitchell on tenor saxophone, Keith Jarrett on piano and Reggie Johnson on bass. It was the first commercial recording to feature Jarrett, who had joined the band a few months earlier. Jack Tracy produced the date, Wally Heider engineered it, and Leonard Feather wrote the original liner notes, observing that Blakey had by then gone through as many sets of Messengers as Woody Herman had Herds.

Limelight, the Mercury sub-label run by Quincy Jones, first issued the album in 1966 under the billing Art Blakey and the "New" Jazz Messengers. It is the only album this lineup recorded, and the last Jazz Messengers recording of the 1960s. Mangione wrote three of the six pieces: the title track, "Recuerdo" and "Between Races." The second side closes on two standards, Rodgers and Hart's "My Romance" and Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster's "Secret Love."
