Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series 180g Black Vinyl LP

This is the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series edition of A Night In Tunisia, a stereo, all-analog reissue mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal in Germany. Mastering and lacquer cutting were both done at Gray's Cohearent Audio, and the runouts on this pressing are etched. The jacket reproduces the original stereo issue, catalog BST 84049, down to the Blue Note logo block on the front.

Blue Note describes the Classic series as affordable 180g reissues in standard packaging, run alongside its Tone Poet audiophile line, with titles chosen by Don Was and Cem Kurosman. A Night In Tunisia came out in the label's October 18, 2024 group, next to Donald Byrd's Royal Flush, Lonnie Smith's Drives and Grant Green's Visions.

The quintet behind it is Art Blakey on drums, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Bobby Timmons on piano and Jymie Merritt on bass. They recorded the album at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on August 7 and 14, 1960, with Alfred Lion producing. The same August dates also produced Like Someone In Love, and A Night In Tunisia was the first of the two to be released, the following year.

Dizzy Gillespie wrote the title piece in 1942, and Blakey stretches it here into an 11-minute drum showcase that opens side A. The other four tunes came from inside the band: Shorter's "Sincerely Diana," written for Blakey's wife, Timmons' "So Tired," and two by Morgan, "Yama" and "Kozo's Waltz." Barbara J. Gardner's original liner notes present the record as Blakey giving his young players room to solo and write, and John Tynan's DownBeat review of September 1961 singled out the leader's solo on "Kozo's Waltz."
