Indie Exclusive Silver Vinyl, 40th Anniversary Edition, Rainbow Foil Jacket

Silver is the independent-store color of Varese Sarabande's 40th anniversary Blue Velvet LP. The label split the reissue across several limited colorways and assigned silver to independent record stores. This copy ships in the same reflective rainbow foil board jacket as the standard anniversary pressing, with a blue hype sticker marking it as an Indie Record Store Exclusive.

The record carries the 14-track album Varese Sarabande first issued in late 1986 as STV-81292, seven tracks to a side. Badalamenti composed and conducted the score, which was recorded by the Film Symphony of Prague. Lynch produced the album, and the jacket credits Chas Ferry with the vinyl mastering.

Blue Velvet began Badalamenti's long partnership with David Lynch. He first joined the production as a vocal coach for Isabella Rossellini, and Lynch then asked him for a song for the picture: "Mysteries of Love," with Lynch's lyrics and Julee Cruise's vocal. It closes side two, and its melody surfaces twice on side one, as a French horn solo and as an instrumental.

Side two also holds three earlier recordings the film draws on: Bill Doggett's "Honky Tonk Part I," a 1956 King Records recording; Roy Orbison's "In Dreams" from 1963; and Ketty Lester's "Love Letters," first released in 1962.

The film opened in the fall of 1986 and brought Lynch an Academy Award nomination for Best Director. The collaboration it started ran on through Wild at Heart, Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks, whose theme won Badalamenti a GRAMMY.
