Blue Note Tone Poet Series 180g Vinyl LP in Gatefold Tip-On Jacket

This is Blue Note's stereo Tone Poet Vinyl Edition of Dance With Death, released March 3, 2023. Joe Harley produced the reissue, and Kevin Gray of Cohearent Audio mastered it from the original analog master tapes and cut the lacquers. Record Technology Inc. (RTI) in Camarillo, California pressed it on 180-gram vinyl, and it is packaged in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket.

Blue Note traces the Tone Poet series to label president Don Was's admiration for the audiophile Blue Note reissues produced by Music Matters. Was brought in Harley, known as the Tone Poet, to choose and supervise the titles. On this jacket the front cover carries the number 73160, the back cover ST-73160, and the spine and labels BST 73160, and the gatefold opens to session photographs of Hill, Tolliver, Farrell and Higgins.

Hill had debuted on Blue Note in 1963. He recorded this quintet date at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on October 11, 1968, with Francis Wolff producing and Rudy Van Gelder engineering. The tapes stayed unissued until 1980, when Blue Note released the album as LT 1030 in a run of vault titles produced by Michael Cuscuna. The label counts it as Hill's tenth Blue Note album.

All six compositions are Hill's. Charles Tolliver plays trumpet, Joe Farrell soprano saxophone on Yellow Violet and tenor saxophone elsewhere, Victor Sproles bass and Billy Higgins drums. AllMusic's Thom Jurek called it "a phenomenal record, one that wears its adventure and authority well."
