Blue Note Tone Poet Edition 180g Stereo LP

This is the stereo Blue Note Tone Poet Edition of Compulsion!!!!!, produced by Joe Harley and mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio from the original analog master tapes. It is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Record Technology Inc. (RTI) in Camarillo, California, and housed in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket. The labels and spine carry the original stereo catalog number, BST 84217, alongside the reissue's own number.

Blue Note President Don Was started the Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series out of admiration for the Blue Note LP reissues produced by Music Matters, and brought in Harley, the "Tone Poet" of the name, to choose and oversee the titles. Harley picked Compulsion!!!!! for the series' March 2026 group of releases.

The gatefold opens on black-and-white photographs from the session itself: Hill at the piano at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, dated October 8, 1965, with captioned shots of the horn players, the drummers and percussionists, and the two bassists.

That one-day session produced the whole album, with Alfred Lion producing; Blue Note issued it in 1967. Hill wrote all four pieces and led Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and flugelhorn, John Gilmore on tenor saxophone and bass clarinet, Cecil McBee on bass and Joe Chambers on drums, with Renaud Simmons and Nadi Qamar on percussion and Richard Davis adding a second bass on "Premonition."

Hill conceived the record as a statement on the legacy of the African American musical tradition, and said he set out to use the piano "more as a percussive than as a lyrical instrument." He dedicated "Legacy" to that heritage, and closed the album with "Limbo," a 20-bar piece. Billboard's review on the original release called it a "strange and moving record."
