Blue Note Tone Poet Edition 180g Vinyl LP in Gatefold Tip-On Jacket

This LP is part of Blue Note's Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series. Joe Harley produced the stereo edition, Kevin Gray of Cohearent Audio mastered it all-analog from the original master tapes, and Record Technology Inc. (RTI) pressed it on 180-gram vinyl. It comes in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket, and Blue Note issued it on June 6, 2025. The runouts carry the B0038391-01 matrix alongside Gray's KPG@CA stamp.

The series grew out of Blue Note president Don Was's admiration for the audiophile Blue Note reissues produced by Music Matters. Was brought in Harley, known as the "Tone Poet," to oversee it, and the series launched in 2019 to mark the label's 80th anniversary.

Andrew!!! was recorded on June 25, 1964, at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with Alfred Lion producing. Blue Note held the session back for almost four years and issued it as BST 84203 in April 1968. Hill, who had moved to New York in 1961 to work with Dinah Washington, leads a quintet here: tenor saxophonist John Gilmore, on a rare date away from the Sun Ra Arkestra, with vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, bassist Richard Davis and drummer Joe Chambers. All six pieces are Hill's own compositions.

Blue Note's notes record that founder Alfred Lion considered Hill a pianist and composer as original and important as Thelonious Monk. They place this album last in a run of five Hill made in eight months, after Black Fire, Smoke Stack, Judgment! and Point of Departure. A 2005 CD reissue added two alternate takes; this LP keeps the original six-track program. In 2025 the album reached number 75 on Greece's IFPI album chart.
