Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram Vinyl LP in a Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

This pressing comes from Verve's Acoustic Sounds Series, the audiophile reissue line Verve and Universal Music Enterprises produce with Acoustic Sounds, whose CEO Chad Kassem supervises it. Ryan K. Smith mastered it at Sterling Sound from the original analog tapes, and Quality Record Pressings pressed it on 180-gram vinyl. Both runouts carry the B0036675-01 matrix and his RKS Sterling mark. It was issued on March 31, 2023.

The jacket is an old-style tip-on gatefold printed by Stoughton Printing, and the disc sits in a QRP archival rice-paper inner sleeve. Cover and label keep the original Impulse! artwork and its Stereo AS 9203 number, with photography by Chuck Stewart and Ed Michel. The back cover credits the set as a Verve Records release of an album first issued on Impulse! in 1971.

Coltrane recorded the first four pieces at her home studio in Dix Hills, New York, on November 8, 1970, and produced them with Ed Michel. She plays harp on the title track and "Shiva-Loka" and piano on "Stopover Bombay" and "Something About John Coltrane," with Pharoah Sanders on soprano saxophone and percussion, Cecil McBee on bass, Rashied Ali on drums, Tulsi on tanpura and Majid Shabazz on bells and tambourine. "Isis and Osiris" comes from a performance at the Village Gate on July 4, 1970, with Charlie Haden on bass and Vishnu Wood on oud.

It was her fourth studio album, named for Swami Satchidananda, the teacher she studied under, and "Something About John Coltrane" is built on themes by her late husband. Rolling Stone placed it at No. 446 in its 2020 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Downbeat's review glossed the title plainly: "Satchidananda means knowledge, existence, bliss."
