Black 180-Gram Vinyl LP in Gatefold Jacket, Verve By Request Series

This is the black-vinyl edition of A Monastic Trio from Verve By Request, Verve's reissue series of monthly releases drawn from the Verve Label Group jazz catalog. Titles in the series are pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Third Man in Detroit, the city where Alice Coltrane was born in 1937. The single LP comes in a gatefold jacket that reproduces the original Impulse! front cover, down to the stereo catalog number A-9156 and the "Produced by Coltrane Records" badge. Its street date was June 7, 2024, and a limited yellow edition of the same reissue was issued under a separate barcode.

A Monastic Trio was Coltrane's first album as a leader. It was recorded in 1968 at the Coltrane home studio in Dix Hills, New York, and released by Impulse! that December. "Ohnedaruth" comes from a January 29 session, and the other five pieces were cut on June 6. Coltrane plays piano and harp. Pharoah Sanders plays flute, bass clarinet and tenor saxophone, Jimmy Garrison plays bass and Rashied Ali plays drums, and all three had been members of John Coltrane's last quintet. Ben Riley plays drums on one track.

The album followed John Coltrane's death in July 1967, and the jacket dedicates the music to Ohnedaruth, the spiritual name it gives him. Alice Coltrane is credited as producer, and Bob Thiele oversaw the release at Impulse!. Verve's notes for this reissue say that early reviews were lukewarm. The LP keeps the original six-track running order across two sides. The three bonus tracks added to the 1998 CD reissue are not included.
