Bluesville Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram Vinyl LP

This is the Bluesville Acoustic Sounds Series edition of Albert King's 1968 Fillmore album, issued by Craft Recordings on September 13, 2024, under catalog number CR00745, with the Stax logo restored to the jacket. Matthew Lutthans cut the lacquers from the original master tapes at The Mastering Lab at Blue Heaven Studios in an all-analog (AAA) chain, and the record is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings.

It comes in a paper-wrapped tip-on jacket with a blue obi strip carrying new notes by Grammy-winning producer and writer Scott Billington, who selects the titles for the series. Craft and Acoustic Sounds launched Bluesville in February 2024, taking the name of the blues imprint Prestige started in 1959.

Stax recorded King over two nights at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, June 26 and 27, 1968, with Al Jackson Jr. of Booker T. & the M.G.'s producing and Bill Halverson and Ron Capone engineering. The back-cover notes by Gene Simmons, then Stax's West Coast promotion man, recall that he suggested a live Fillmore recording to Al Bell after watching King keep a Shrine Auditorium crowd on its feet all night in Los Angeles.

King's band on those dates was Willie James Exon on guitar, James Washington on organ, Roosevelt Pointer on bass and Theotis Morgan on drums. The six-song set pairs King originals with Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" and "Please Love Me," written by B.B. King and Jules Taub.

Stax first released the album in November 1968, and it reached No. 150 on the Billboard 200. More material from the same two nights surfaced in 1990 as Wednesday Night in San Francisco and Thursday Night in San Francisco. The Encyclopedia of Popular Music calls the record a classic that introduced King's music to the white rock audience.
