Verve By Request Series Remastered 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP in Gatefold Jacket

This pressing belongs to Verve By Request, the reissue series that Verve Records/UMe revived with Third Man Records. Each month the series issues two titles from the Verve Label Group's jazz catalog, chosen by Verve and Third Man, and the picks lean toward out-of-print records and fan requests. The Awakening was transferred from the original analog tapes, remastered, and pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at Third Man Pressing in Detroit. The gatefold jacket keeps the original Impulse! front cover with its AS-9194 catalog number. The spine and labels carry Verve's catalog number, B0036678-01.

Ahmad Jamal recorded the album with bassist Jamil Nasser and drummer Frank Gant at Plaza Sound Studios in New York City on February 2 and 3, 1970. Ed Michel produced it, and it came out on Impulse! the same year. Leonard Feather's liner notes say Jamal played a nine-foot Steinway grand on the date. The program has two Jamal originals, the title track and "Patterns," along with "I Love Music," a new piece by Emil Boyd and Hale Smith. Rounding it out are three then-recent jazz compositions (Herbie Hancock's "Dolphin Dance," Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments" and Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Wave") and the 1931 Harry Warren standard "You're My Everything."

Scott Yanow's AllMusic review describes a denser, more adventurous Jamal in 1970, one who had kept his musical identity. Pitchfork rated the album 8.0. The record has also become a source for hip-hop producers, and Nas and Common have both sampled it. Be With Records' notes name Common's "Resurrection," built by No I.D. around a figure from "Dolphin Dance."
