RSD Essentials #082 Orange With Black, White & Yellow Splatter Vinyl 2LP

Number 082 in the RSD Essentials series, this Virgin and UMe reissue presses Mer De Noms on two LPs of orange vinyl splattered with black, white and yellow, housed in a gatefold jacket. It reached stores on March 6, 2026. The album runs across four sides, three tracks to a side, and keeps the vinyl configuration of the record: "Sleeping Beauty" carries its extended intro and "Over" appears in its alternate mix.

Mer De Noms, French for "Sea of Names," was the debut of A Perfect Circle, the band guitarist Billy Howerdel formed with Tool singer Maynard James Keenan after years working as a guitar technician for Tool, Nine Inch Nails and the Smashing Pumpkins. The lineup was completed by Paz Lenchantin on bass and violin, Troy Van Leeuwen on guitar and Josh Freese on drums, with Primus drummer Tim Alexander playing on the album version of "The Hollow." Howerdel produced and mixed alongside Alan Moulder, and Eddy Schreyer mastered.

Most of the song titles are names of people Keenan knew. "Renholdër" spells "Re:D.Lohner" backward, a nod to guitarist and engineer Danny Lohner. Some of the music, "The Hollow" and "Breña" among it, goes back to Howerdel's writing as early as 1988.

Released by Virgin on May 23, 2000, the album entered the Billboard 200 at No. 4, at the time the highest debut for a rock band's first album, and sold more than 188,000 copies in its first week. The RIAA certified it platinum that October. Its three singles, "Judith," "3 Libras" and "The Hollow," each reached the top 20 of Billboard's Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock charts. The video for "Judith," above, was directed by David Fincher.
