180 Gram Black Vinyl, Gatefold

Hatful Of Hollow is not a studio album. Rough Trade assembled it in 1984 from BBC session recordings alongside singles and B-sides, drawing on four 1983 sessions: two for John Peel, recorded on 18 May and 14 September, and two for David Jensen, recorded on 26 June and 25 August. That is why the production credit splits four ways between John Porter, Roger Pusey, Dale Griffin and the band, with Pusey and Griffin handling the BBC dates and Porter the studio singles.

The versions are the point. "Back To The Old House" appears here in its acoustic Peel reading rather than the single arrangement, and "This Charming Man" is a session take rather than the familiar mix. "How Soon Is Now?" had been a B-side to "William, It Was Really Nothing"; this compilation is where it first sat on an album in the UK. Morrissey sings, Johnny Marr plays guitars, harmonica, mandolin and slide, Andy Rourke plays bass and Mike Joyce drums, with Porter adding electronic percussion.

The record reached No. 7 on the UK Albums Chart and stayed on it for 46 weeks, and the BPI certified it Platinum. This pressing belongs to the reissue campaign Frank Arkwright remastered with Marr at Metropolis Studios in London in 2011, which reinstated the original sleeve photograph in place of the cropped 1987 redesign. Rhino pressed it in Europe at Optimal Media on 180-gram vinyl, in a gatefold jacket carrying a band photograph and the personnel credits inside, with a printed inner sleeve.
