They Call Us Wild is the 1975 follow-up to The Wild Magnolias' groundbreaking self-titled debut, the first commercially released album by a Mardi Gras Indian group. Produced by Philippe Rault, the record deepens the band's dense New Orleans funk with a darker, more haunted and psychedelic streak, layering Big Chief Bo Dollis and Monk Boudreaux's call-and-response chants over the swampy grooves of Willie Tee (Wilson Turbinton), Erving Charles Jr. and members of The Gaturs. Among the most sampled bands of all time, the Wild Magnolias have been drawn on by everyone from Nas to Public Enemy to the Jungle Brothers. Championed by critic Robert Christgau as "the most boisterous recorded party I know," it is a cornerstone of New Orleans funk. This Jackpot Records reissue is the album's first US release: an all-analog (AAA) pressing mastered and lacquered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, pressed on limited red vinyl at Optimal, with the original gatefold jacket design.
