Live Home Library Vol. 2 is the second volume in the Decemberists' series of live releases, issued on the band's own label, Youth and Beauty Brigade. This is the Red Right Ankle edition: two LPs pressed on limited red vinyl and housed in a custom wide-spine jacket. The band's announcement placed this colorway with independent record stores, alongside a Shiny Clear edition sold through its own shop. The recording is a vinyl exclusive and is not available on streaming services.

The fourteen performances come from three nights at Brooklyn Steel in Brooklyn, New York, on April 17, 18 and 19, 2017. The room had been open only a few weeks at the time, built inside a former steel manufacturing plant. Over the run the band played 62 songs and repeated only nine of them on consecutive nights. Tucker Martine mixed the recordings.

The stage lineup is the band's five-piece: Colin Meloy, Chris Funk, Jenny Conlee, Nate Query and John Moen. In his liner notes Meloy calls the shows "the band at its very best with this lineup," adding, "There's a looseness, here, a kind of swaggery suredness."

The selection reaches back to "Los Angeles, I'm Yours" and "Red Right Ankle" from Her Majesty the Decemberists (2003) and "We Both Go Down Together" from Picaresque (2005). The Crane Wife (2006) supplies three, among them the multi-part suite "The Island." "Down by the Water" and "June Hymn" come from The King Is Dead, the 2011 album that debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and "Make You Better," "Lake Song" and "Till the Water's All Long Gone" from What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World (2015), the most recent album at the time of these shows. "The Tain," the five-part piece the band first issued as a 2004 EP, is here as well. The live take of "O Valencia!" above was the first track shared from the set.

The series began with Live Home Library Vol. 1, recorded at the Royal Oak Music Theatre in August 2009.
