Released for Miles Davis's centennial, Miles '56: The Prestige Recordings gathers the year that produced his most influential work for Prestige: the four albums — Cookin', Relaxin', Workin', and Steamin' — drawn from the two marathon sessions Davis cut with Rudy Van Gelder to close out his contract before moving to Columbia.
The sessions document Davis's first great quintet — Miles Davis on trumpet, John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and "Philly Joe" Jones on drums — with Sonny Rollins, Tommy Flanagan, and Art Taylor appearing across the broader set. The 180-gram 4-LP edition was newly mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio from the original analog tapes; all audio was first transferred and restored by Plangent Processes and remastered by Grammy-winning engineer Paul Blakemore. The set includes a new essay by Grammy-winning music historian Ashley Kahn alongside session notes by the late Dan Morgenstern.
