Miles Davis recorded the soundtrack for Louis Malle's Ascenseur pour l'échafaud in a single overnight session at Le Poste Parisien in Paris on December 4, 1957. At a private screening organized by Malle's assistant Jean-Paul Rappeneau, Davis was given only the briefest of harmonic sketches; he assembled a quintet on the spot — French jazzmen Barney Wilen on tenor saxophone, René Urtreger on piano, Pierre Michelot on bass, and his American compatriot Kenny Clarke on drums — and improvised the entire score to picture as the film played in the studio, without rehearsal.
The result is one of the most quietly influential records in modern jazz: a film-noir reading of cool jazz, atmospheric and immediate. Ten cues recorded that night were later collected as one side of Davis's 1958 album Jazz Track, which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Performance, Solo or Small Group.
This Wax Time edition reissues the complete soundtrack on limited red colored 10-inch vinyl, pressed in Spain.
