Black Vinyl LP

Amandla, released in 1989, was Miles Davis's third and final studio collaboration with bassist and producer Marcus Miller, following Tutu and the Siesta soundtrack. The title is the Zulu word for power and was a rallying cry of the South African anti-apartheid movement. Where Tutu had been a varied set of beats and textures, Amandla holds together as a more consistent record, with more open space around Davis's trumpet. It won a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Fusion Performance and was dedicated to arranger Gil Evans; the closing "Mr. Pastorius" was written in tribute to bassist Jaco Pastorius.

Marcus Miller wrote all but two of the tracks ("Cobra" by George Duke and "Jilli" by John Bigham) and played most of the parts. The supporting cast includes Kenny Garrett on saxophone, Joe Sample on piano, Omar Hakim and Al Foster on drums, Foley on guitar, and percussionists Don Alias and Paulinho Da Costa. This is the Rhino/Warner reissue, pressed on vinyl.
