The Force M.D.'s came up as a street troupe on Staten Island, harmonizing for crowds in Times Square and on the ferry with a hybrid of doo-wop, R&B and the new sound of hip-hop. Tom Silverman signed them to Tommy Boy in 1984, and the group's ballads crossed over fast: "Tender Love," written by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis for the film Krush Groove, reached the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed on the chart for 19 weeks, while "Love Is a House" gave them an R&B number one in 1987.
